Community-based learning gives students the opportunity to learn both inside the classroom and out in the community. Community-based learning can be for all students, at all grade levels in any course. By providing students opportunities to use their knowledge and skills in a community experience, students can see how their skills transfer to new settings.
Goals of Community-Based Learning are to:
- provide opportunities for students’ personal growth
- enhance students’ development as citizens who actively participate in and contribute positively to their communities
- help prepare students for future opportunities, responsibilities, and experience
- foster, promote, and develop student self-esteem, and confidence
- strengthen connections between school and community
Some examples of community-based learning include field trips, guest speakers, job shadows, service learning, co-operative education, and project-based learning.
